Japan said the country would call home its ambassador to South Korea in a protest against a monument to women who were forced to be sex slaves for Japanese soldiers.
Tens of thousands Korean women were forced to be so-called “comfort women” for soldiers in the Japanese army before and during WWII.

Many of them were forced to work in brothels near the front lines.

Also Chinese and Filipino women were forced into prostitution in this way. Some estimate that up to 400,000 women were affected.
